In Scotland several organisations are at least part-funded by the Scottish Government to help and assist businesses achieve sustainability both financially and in terms of the environment.
Each of the organisations operates independently, with its own area of expertise, but at the same time each has to pay attention to what the other organisations are doing. We have developed close ties with many of these organisations and value the inter-dependence we have established.
As you may know, WAB has a specific remit to focus on helping SMEs recycle (and were set up partly because of a need identified by the Federation of Small Businesses) and the bigest challenge we face is engaging with smaller businesses to get them on board the “environmental” bandwagon. In order to do this we try to remain mindful of the needs of businesses outwith the environmental agenda.
Specifically this means we consider how businesses might save costs by looking at their waste issues. On the WAB website, alongside the core functions of the Business Recycling Directory and Poster Creator tool, we also provide information about Reducing and Reusing waste.
You might also notice that the Waste Aware Business website is written in a slightly informal style. This is deliberate because the website is designed to be easily accesible, intuitive and for businesses to be able to find the help they need quickly.
Judging from the number of visitors we get, it seems that we have succeeded in providing a useful range of tools and advice, although there are certainly elements we can improve on which is part of my job here at WAB.
